When I write, I don't sit down with a complicated plot and dream up people to fill in the gaps.
Exactly the opposite, I start with the characters.
They have a story to tell. They have lives, loved ones, and pasts that tend to create more compelling twists than I could imagine.
So, please, let me tell you a story....

A kidnapping pedophile, a recovering addict, and a lost love who is hell-bent on revenge. Some friends, some enemies, some unknowns but all of them seeking justice. The story tells itself.
Reigh (Christina) has already lived a full life, a life that would fascinate most people. But, during her new normal, a nightmare from her past comes back to haunt her. Not just from one identity she ran away from, but two.
Evolving and becoming who she was meant to be means accepting who she has become.

Christina walked away from a loving family to satisfy her cravings. That's not unusual; until you realize her dependency... and the source of it.

But above all, she is an addict.
Christina is justified in her purpose. She finds peace in her judgments. Her life is exactly what she has made it and she thrives on feeding her habit. Then someone discovers who she is. That is the worst thing she can imagine.... until another unexpected event spins her life completely out of control.
Now everything is called into question.
Christina is caught off-guard by a single occurrence that could change her perspective, her mission, and her life.

Anna doesn't feel worthy.
She struggles with addiction. She lacks purpose and wallows in regrets from her past. She battles mental demons and bombards herself with negative self-talk. We see her pain and experience her inner turmoil.
Then she meets Katie who is vibrant, full of life and laughter. Katie introduces Anna to a new way of thinking, a new family, and a new perspective. And God.
Soon, Anna is changed. She is saved. She turns to Jesus. She finds value. She finds worth. Life. Meaning. Purpose. The sun shines brighter and the birds chirp just for her.
Honestly, not atypical of any other Christian fiction story... but then Anna falls again.
After she's "good" she's not good. Grace Shawl is a glimpse behind the curtain of the Christian façade. A look at the reality of daily struggles. The balance of faith and freedom with doubt and compulsions. This, this perspective, is what sets the book apart from all others. Anna lives the backslide. She endures the setbacks. She doesn’t do it with grace and dignity. It’s dirty. It’s hard. And it’s raw.
Thankfully, she once again finds her way on the right path, but after more scars and more poor choices. After consequences. Grace Shawl highlights the ups-and-downs that so many people live but so few talk about. Anna’s story illustrates how the past is not magically erased when she decides to follow Christ. Anna loses herself, and the battle against her addiction, more than once, but always finds her way back to grace.
This story is a story of Grace. Lost love. New love. Sin. Acceptance. Change. Mercy. Forgiveness. Family. Friendship. Coffee. And Truth.
